Scripture
1 Samuel 15:22-23
22 And Samuel said,
“Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,
as in obeying the voice of the Lord?
Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice,
and to listen than the fat of rams.
23
For rebellion is as the sin of divination,
and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the Lord,
he has also rejected you from being king.”
Biblical Principle
In the church we talk about glorifying God. It can be difficult to wrap our minds around how to glorify God with our lives. But the Scripture is clear on what that entails. We glorify God by loving Him and keeping His commands and laws. In the above passage Saul disobeyed God and he justified himself by deciding to use the spoils of his rebellion to make a sacrifice to God. But God spoke through the judge Samuel, He delights in us when we obey His clear commands and laws more than what we bring to Him as a sacrifice. To disobey is to be like the demons and those who have dealings with them. Like the old hymn says we ought to, “Trust and obey.”
Application
For Parents
How do you model obedience of the commands of Scripture to your children?
Do you expect obedience from your children in your home?
Do you delight in their obedience?
For Children
How does obeying your parents relate to obeying to God?
What commands are there in Scripture do you struggle to obey?
Activity
Memorize: 1 Samuel 15:22
And Samuel said,
“Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,
